The Time to Cut The Cord Has Arrived!

High cable prices and exorbitant satellite rates have finally crossed the line into the realm of the ridiculous. Yet, many of us continue to pay these costs because television service, and "having something on to watch" has become a near necessity in today's world. I recently joined the ranks of the Cord-Cutters - a quickly growing segment of society that has shunned the cable and satellite companies and has instead opted to stream content wirelessly via the internet. I couldn't be more happy with the choice, and I believe that others would opt for this change if they knew how easy and effective it is! This site is dedicated to providing that information, along with links to necessary equipment and content sites, so that we can once and for all remove the confusion for those who want to take this step. Enjoy!

Chromecast now has an iOS app!

The guys over at venturebeat.com detail the new app: http://venturebeat.com/2013/08/27/googles-killer-chromecast-media-streamer-gets-its-own-ios-app/  Cool stuff!  Get your Chromecast here:

Can't wait to pick one up - the ability to stream from my laptop or tablet without an AppleTV sounds heavenly to me.  :)

Awesome article on cutting the cord from Babble

PlayStation Sunday Ticket Update!

Apparently Sony and the NFL will not be renewing their agreement to carry Sunday Ticket on PlayStation this year.  Definitely bad news, but don't despair - there are other options!  Here's what I'm going to do:
    • I'm going to order Madden NFL 25th Anniversary Edition, which comes with a free year of Sunday Ticket if you're not a DirecTV subscriber (and of course, I'm not) on your tablet, phone, or computer.
    • Madden NFL 25 Anniversary Edition with NFL Sunday Ticket: $99.99
    • I'm going to purchase another HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my TV - I figure a 15' cord will work well for my living room.
    • Voila!  NFL Sunday Ticket on the TV! :)
There are many ways to skin this cat, but this is one good way to get it done, and cheaply at that!  $100 for a year of Sunday Ticket is an absolute GONGA deal, so take advantage of this offer before it's sold out.  Best of luck!

Do yourself a favor - give "The Newsroom" a shot

Every once in awhile, a new TV show comes along that reminds you why you love TV so much.  Those are fewer and farther between these days, but I just started watching one that I thought I'd recommend to you. That show is "The Newsroom", from HBO.

I'm really getting into the storyline, which, in a nutshell, has to do with a big-time network news anchor relocating his conscience and deciding to do "the real news" rather than the homogenized material distributed by all the other news networks.

The plot, in and of itself, is interesting, inspiring, and refreshing.  Combine that with elegantly written dialogue, a generous helping of humor, and excellently developed characters, and you have a show that'll keep you coming back for more.

And, of course, I'm streaming, so I'm working my way through season 1 now, and will move on to season 2 as soon as I'm finished.  Join me - give it a watch and let me know what you think.  I don't think you'll be sorry.  :)

Whoa! Individual Netflix Profiles?! Awesome!

Very cool stuff!  Now each member of your household can have their own Netflix profile within your account.  That means that Netflix will be able to learn your individual likes and dislikes, and will be able to recommend shows and movies that are more specific to your tastes, rather than your kids'!  I'm loving that, and going to set it up for us right now.  Here's more:

Thanks Cool Moms! :)

Wow - I would not have expected this...

...that said, a pretty big win for Netflix!  They're obviously doing something right.

An awesome online tv/movie viewing guide!

Here's something really cool for you cord-cutters out there.  Ever hear about a great movie and wonder which service will allow you to stream it?  Well, here's something that caught my interest:

http://www.canistream.it/

This site is very cool! It allows you to input/search for a TV show or movie, then tells you on which service (and for how much) you can stream it.  Here's an example I tried with one of my favorite movies, Super Size Me.

It doesn't appear that it's 100% accurate, yet, but it looks like it's pretty close.  I say this because I know for a fact that this movie is available on Netflix.  That said, it's a great step in the right direction!  If I don't have to go home and search through all my services to see which one carries a movie or TV show that I want to watch, that just means more time savings for me!  :)

Try it out and let me know what you think.

What's next for this blog?

I've been thinking about what else I can add to help people who are ready to cut the cord, but might be a little worried or reluctant because of the technical details and setup.  I've been toying with the idea of adding videos to show how to set up the various components that make up a streaming "system".  I'm actually moving soon, so that presents a perfect opportunity to tear it all down and put it all back while filming. Would this be helpful to you?

What else would you like to see here?  I want to be a valuable resources both to prospective cord-cutters and those of you who have already made the leap.  Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
